Our final concert of the NSCS 82nd Season features two settings of the Requiem, one by 19th-century French composer Gabriel Fauré, and the other by contemporary British composer Bob Chilcott.  Both works feature peaceful, contemplative settings of the ancient text of the Roman Catholic Mass for the Dead.

Fauré has famously stated, “It has been said that my Requiem does not express the fear of death and someone has called it a lullaby of death.  But it is thus that I see death: as a happy deliverance, an aspiration towards happiness above ….”  His setting emphasizes a faith in eternal rest and “perpetual light.”

Chilcott, who as a youth in the Choir of King’s College sang the Pie Jesu solo from the Fauré Requiem, also sets the ancient text in a meditative spirit.  In a nod to his many years in Anglican church music, Chilcott has included in his Requiem a movement in English from the Book of Common Prayer.

With these two related, yet distinctive pieces, our final concert of the 2017-28 season should be an uplifting one, pointing towards light, hope, and peace.
