Second Concert
Mozart - Mass in C minor "The Great"
Franz Joseph Haydn
- Missa brevis Sancti Joannis de Deo
Sunday March 17,
2002 3 PM
The Parish Church of Saint Luke
939 Hinman Avenue, Evanston, IL
Works of Haydn and
Mozart defined the classical tradition. In his charming Mass, nicknamed
Kleine Orgelmesse, Haydn elevated the organ from its traditional role as a
continuo instrument and gave it solo status. Mozart's "The Great"
C minor Mass exhibits the genius of his choral writing and is said to be
".not only [Mozart's] last but also [his] most excellent and monumental work
of this genre."

Thompson's
1936 work is based on the Prophecy of Isaiah. Sung a cappella, it is at
once powerfully intense and beautifully melodious, and aptly illustrates an
idyllic peaceable kingdom where all creatures live harmoniously together.
Argento, one of the most revered American composers, weaves his spell,
intermingling texts from the biblical tale with rollicking sea shanties,
enthralling us anew with Jonah's astonishing adventures! Come hear these
American choral masterpieces!
