Remember that next week we again rehearse at Trinity Lutheran Church on Monday at 7:30; and at Saints Faith, Hope & Charity on Tuesday between 7:00 and 7:15--and there again on Saturday morning, December 4.

If you have not yet gotten your copies of the traditional holiday music (i.e. carols) for the December concert, be sure to pick them up at a back table his evening.

Wylie Crawford, though not singing with us this season, has graciously volunteered his house for the listening party on Tuesday, December 7.

On Sunday afternoon, December 12, during the 1860s Holiday Open House, the Evanston Historical Society is presenting a workshop and demonstration on sacred harp singing, as heard in the motion picture Cold Mountain . Everyone is welcome to participate or just to stop by and listen. For more information and reservations, contact the Society at 847/475-3410 or www.evanstonhistorical.org.

There's still time for groups of ten or more to purchase discounted tickets for Bella Voce's Christmas concerts on December 10, 11, and 18. Contact Steve Warner at rehearsal, at 847/866-7396, or at rswarner@uic.edu.

(over)

As most of you know by now, Sam Napady died last week. We were obviously a special part of his life; indeed, his obituary in the Chicago newspapers says that he "enjoyed singing with the North Shore Choral Society." The Society sent flowers to his family, and David Hunt attended and sang at his memorial service on Saturday. Below, David shares some thoughts about Sam. Personal messages to Sam's family can be entered in a guest book on line at www.ChicagoTribune.com/obituaries or sent to Sam's niece, Fran Arcuri, at 1224 Marengo, Forest Park 60130.

Sam Napady (June 6, 1947-November 16, 2004)

Each NSCS member brings special talents to our chorus. Having sat beside Sam in the bass section, I can easily describe his talents. Sam had a very keen musical ear for sight reading and intonation. He always worked on his music outside of rehearsal and knew the music thoroughly by the third or fourth rehearsal. He was so intent on watching Donald that he usually had conversations with anyone standing in front of him. I doubt that anyone in the chorus tried harder to execute correct cut-offs.

Sam's life had its share of challenges. NSCS and the great music we perform was a real lifeline for him. Now, however, I believe he is singing the most glorious music imaginable and in a chorus where everyone is on the front row, everyone knows the music, everyone cuts-off correctly, and everyone sounds even better than Caruso or Maria Callas. I fully believe that Sam was seated as bass section leader the minute after he arrived.
