BLUE NOTES FOR TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 4, 2007

READY, SET, GO!

RunnerWith our first concert scheduled for November 11, we have much less time than usual to gather ads for our programs.  Please take several blank contract forms from the stack in the narthex and visit local businesses that may want to place ads in our programs this year.  Programs from previous concerts are also available as examples for prospective advertisers. Please submit all contracts and payments to Mary Ann Kissock or Karen Fish-Schurder.  Thank you--and, of course, thanks to the advertisers as well!  Deadline: October 12.

Many of us like to wet our whistles during rehearsal breaks.  Help is needed to allow us to do just that by providing juice and cups.  Contact Yael Wurmfeld at 847/763-1314 or see her at rehearsal.  Not only do these beverages provide refreshment, they also add to our treasury with the bills and coins that we drinkers slip into the donation cup on the juice table.

The NSCS Board of Directors meets at 9:00 A.M. this coming Saturday, September 8, in St. John’s Lutheran Church, 1235 Wilmette Avenue. All NSCS members are welcome to attend.

A number of extra season brochures are available in the narthex for the taking and the using.  To mail one, affix a 41-cent stamp atop the non-profit permit and seal the open side with a piece of Scotch tape.

The Search Committee has interviewed twenty-three men and women who hope to succeed Donald as our Music Director. Soon the Committee will select the eight finalists who will be asked to conduct selected rehearsals after our first concert.

The fridge magnets were produced by Dave Salzman of Central Avenue Printing in Highland Park.  Dave does a lot of printing for us (and offers generous discounts). Besides us, season subscribers and patrons are receiving magnets.

Next Tuesday is another opportunity for new singers to audition. Anyone interested should contact Len Barker at 847/272-2351.

Everyone should have received an email message about the music for the first concert.  However, there may have been some glitches as the result of Len’s moving to another email provider.  If you did not receive the message, please let Len know ASAP. Thanks.

Donations ranging from $20.00 to $1,000.00 have recently been received from ticket buyers. Though most of our donations come as the result of our fall and spring patron mailings, any time is a good time to make a donation.  These can be mailed to our post office address or handed to Len at a rehearsal.

Thanks to Kent Fuller, who dexterously handled the mailing of the August Blue Notes and the letter from David Hunt inviting former singers to join us for this last season under Donald’s baton. Incidentally, if you know of an alum who might like to sing but who may not have been contacted, give that information to David.

Our condolences to Lynne Curtis, whose mother recently passed away.

Philip Martin will miss singing in our first concert due to hip surgery in October—though he may be in the audience. He hopes to be back in the bass section for the other two concerts.

Remember that Blue Notes is our opportunity to bring items of interest to the attention of the entire chorus. Anyone wishing to place an item in the next week’s Blue Notes should contact Len at 847/272-2351 or lenpbarker@comcast.net.     (Please note the change in his email address.)

Remember also that our web site—www.northshorechoral.org—is a font of information about NSCS, both for members and non. Blue Notes is posted there each week (often before it arrives at rehearsals); tickets can be ordered there as well. If you’re not familiar with our site, take a few minutes to become so.  And thanks always to Webmaster Jim Miller for keeping the site in mint condition.

This discouraging letter was recently received from Terry Scrogum, Executive Director of the Illinois Arts Council.

Dear Illinois Arts Council Applicants:

The staff and I wanted to take this opportunity to let you know what is happening to the Illinois Arts Council’s grant making process.  All programs of the Illinois Arts Council have been reduced by almost 30% from last year’s level. As a result of this large reduction, the IAC will have significantly less money available to award.

Since learning of this reduction, the staff and I along with the board have been working to determine the extent of these cuts to all programs. We will be communicating with you as soon as we know the ultimate effects.

The Illinois Arts Council values Illinois artists, arts organizations, and other entities providing arts programming. We sincerely regret this situation and the problems it may cause.

So do we!
