ELECTIONS: During this evening’s break, at the
NSCS annual business meeting, the Nominating Committee will present
the following slate of officers to fill Board positions for the 2008-2009
season:
President - David Hunt
Secretary - Nancy Friday
Treasurer - Gary Hendrickson
VP for Concerts - Tom Keller
VP for Fundraising - Hank Bohanon
VP for Operations – Julie McDowell
Member at Large - Anthony Green
Member at Large - Steve Warner
Member at Large - Anne Harkonen
No nominee has been slated for the position of VP for Public Relations.
Listed below are the names of choristers and others who have
agreed to serve as committee chairs during the coming season.
Thanks to these members of the Nominating Committee: Joan Merchan, Karen
Rigotti, Karen Fish Schurder, David Wojtowicz, and John Summerhays, chair.
TICKETS: Buy ‘em tonight from Len Barker before
the rehearsal or during the break. The prices are still $22.00,
$20.00, and $12.00. Packets of tickets to take and sell are also
available. And let Len know if any comps are needed.
DONATIONS: Remember that donations for regular
operating expenses are needed as well as for special situations. (Elijah is
costing over $20,000.) Len will gladly accept them this evening
in time to be recognized in the June 7 program.
REHEARSALS:
Tuesday, June 3 - There will be no regular rehearsal
on June 3. However…
Wednesday, June 4 – We should arrive at St.
Luke’s in plenty of time to be seated and ready to sing by
7:00; planning to be there by 6:30 and certainly no later than 6:45
is a great idea. The orchestra members will have arrived by about
6:30 and will likely be warming up, so quiet is requested.
Thursday, June 5 – Same as June 4.
Please remember to limit any food/beverage intake to water only in
the sanctuary.
SET-UP: Help is needed, beginning at 3:30 on June
4: chairs, music stands, lights, etc. Spending an hour or so at this
task would be a special thank-you gift for Donald. He hopes to finish
by 6:00 since orchestra members may arrive shortly thereafter.
PUBLICITY: Many posters and postcards have
been printed and are lying on tables in the narthex, obviously not
doing their job. It’s really not too late to spread the word. Postcards
need 27-cent stamps if mailed, but they can be distributed in lots
of other ways.
LISTENING PARTY: Sheri Young has offered her
house at 1015 Forest Avenue in Evanston for the Elijah listening
party on Tuesday, June 10, at 7:30. Bring some food and/or drink
to share.
POULENC CDs: A few have not been picked up and/or
paid for. Please check with Len this evening.
BENEFIT UPDATE: The basic plans for our Benefit, “North
Shore Choral Society’s Night of the Rising Stars,” are
now nearly complete. It will be held on November 15, 2008, at the
Jewish Reconstructionist Congregation (JRC), a beautiful new “green” building
at 303 Dodge Ave., just south of Oakton in Evanston. The program
will feature top singers from the four university (Northwestern,
DePaul, Roosevelt, and North Park) vocal programs, a silent auction,
and a raffle of our favorite Paris apartment. (continued)
During the summer, we’d like you all to consider what
you might contribute to the silent auction. Categories from our 2005
auction include: Artwork, Books/Computer Ware, Children’s Items,
Gift Items, Housewares, Homemade Food, Gourmet Food, Travel, Services,
Jewelry & Wearables, Music Items, Restaurants, Sports, and Theater
Tickets. To inspire your own ideas,
the great items we’ve received so far include first editions
of books by top political figures, a tour and tasting at a local
brewery, a full day of beauty at a salon, hours with a business consultant,
seminar with a business writer, Lyric Opera tickets, time with a
math tutor, a Dali lithograph, a ceramic bowl, a child’s quilt,
a private tour of the Field Museum, and more.
Finally, we have invited faculty members from all the above
vocal departments to attend Elijah. This will give
them a taste, if they don’t know already, of the breadth and
depth of our chorus!!
BLUE NOTES: The season’s final edition will
be on June 4. Submit items at 847/272-2351 or lenpbarker@comcast.net

Dear Friends,
Around the middle of October, my wife and I will relocate in Richardson,
Texas, to be close to our daughter’s family and to watch and
play with our three-year-old only grandson, Even Dano. Elijah will
be my last participation with NSCS.
We have lived in the area for almost eighteen years after a ten-year
stay in New York. It took us a long time to make good friends
and to get used to the very harsh climate. We became particularly
fond of the waterfront around Northwestern University. Upon
retirement, I taught Japanese at various community colleges, including
Oakton, where I met Ms. Vesely, who took my class. She led
me to NSCS about seven years ago; since then, I have been singing
in many concerts. It gives me great joy and a heavenly feeling when
we are deeply into choral music.
I thank all of you, and especially our long-serving music director
Dr. Chen and our accompanist Ms. Peterson. I wish NSCS a successful
selection of the new music director and wish that it will grow and
flourish under the new director. Goodbye and Sayonara.
