Blue
Notes for Monday, May 22, & Tuesday, May 23, 2006
Paul. Siegal is eager to sell tickets for the Schumann concert this
evening. Regular prices are $31. For seniors age 65 and over, $27.
For youth age 12 and under, $22.
MONDAY: Posters for the Schumann concert are available this evening
(and tomorrow evening as well). We need much publicity for this concert,
so an extra number have been printed to let lots of folks on the North
Shore and beyond know who we are and what we’re doing. Thanks
to Ryan Stremke for another striking poster design.
TUESDAY: Postcards are ready to be labeled and stamped. Many additional
postcards are available for us to mail and/or otherwise distribute
to our friends—and maybe even to some folks who are not our
friends.
Payment is now being accepted for the Shostakovich CDs at $10.00
each. Checks should be made out to NSCS and given to Len Barker. Cash
in the exact amount is also accepted. When paying, please cross your
name off the list. No delivery date has been set.
The schedule for the remainder of this season is as follows:
Tuesday, May 30, 7:30 - regular rehearsal at Northminster
Monday, June 5, 7:30 – possible extra rehearsal at Trinity Lutheran
Tuesday, June 6, 7:00 – rehearsal with orchestra at Pick-Staiger
Friday, June 9, 7:00 – rehearsal for soloists only at Pick-Staiger
(no chorus)
Saturday, June 10, 7:00 – dress rehearsal at Pick-Staiger
Sunday, June 11, 1:30 – call time for the 3:00 concert at Pick-Staiger
immediately after the concert – 70th birthday party in the Pick-Staiger
lobby
Next Tuesday, May 30, we will vote on the revised NSCS By-Laws. At
its Saturday meeting, the Board considered comments submitted by several
members and, after making minimal changes to the original draft, unanimously
approved the document. This version, which contains no substantive
revisions, is now available on our website. Please take an opportunity
to read it before next Tuesday. A number of people are to be thanked
for taking on the thankless job of revising these by-laws, primarily
John Shea, who has taken major responsibility for preparing the document
on which we will be voting; Bob Brotman, who wrote a preliminary draft
last summer; and Tom Keller, who has doggedly kept up with every detail
along the way.

Tentative dates for next season’s concerts—which are described
in the patron letter that you should have received by now—are
December 3 at Faith, Hope & Charity, March 4 and June 3 at St.
Luke’s.
The 3rd Annual Chicago Summer Sings! presents three sing-along opportunities
in June—each led by a celebrated Chicago area conductor. Each
event begins at 7:00 P.M. at First United Church of Oak Park, 848
Lake Street. There is a $10.00 fee for both singers and audience members;
music can be brought or rented for $2.00. On June 13: Bach’s
Mass in B Minor, directed by Bill Chin. On June 20: Lauridsen’s
Lux Aeterna, directed by Jonathan Miller. On June 27: Gilbert and
Sullivan’s The Mikado, directed by Dennis Northway. For information,
call 708/386-5215, ext. 39.
"Dance to the Music!" is the title of a concert to be performed
by the Cantate Chamber Choir on Saturday, June 3, 7:30 P.M. at Grace
Lutheran Church, 1430 South Boulevard in Evanston, and again on Sunday,
June 4, 3:00 P.M. at Luther Memorial Church, 2500 West Wilson Street
in Chicago. Mostly a cappella, this is really fun music, with a couple
of spirituals by local composer Rollo Dilworth, several Beatles tunes,
some Bernstein, Britten, and even a little Mozart. See David Hunt
or Ellen Pullin for $10.00 tickets. (Tickets at the door are $15.00)
Stephen Alltop's Green Lake Music Festival Choral Workshop, held
at Ripon College from July 6th to the 9th, needs a few more enthusiastic
sopranos, basses, and tenors. The culminating performance, “Mozart
in Motion,” with outstanding soloists and a professional orchestra,
is a program of musical jewels such as Mozart’s Dixit et Magnificat,
Ave Verum Corpus, and sparkling pieces for solo piano, organ and orchestra;
great works admired by Mozart, including Alegri’s Miserere and
Bach’s Singet dem Herrn; plus Lord of the Dance, Liebeslieder
Waltzes of Brahms, Mata del Anima Sola, spirituals, and selections
from Lerner and Loewe. For information: http://www.greenlakefestival.org
Last Thursday, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Congressional
Arts Caucus Amendment to increase funding for the National Endowment
for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Humanities by $5 million
each. Thanks to those of us who contacted our Congresspersons asking
them to support this measure.
