BLUE NOTES FOR TUESDAY, APRIL 5, 2005
( just four days-and counting-'til we Spring into Song)
"One of the first klezmer revival bands
in the Midwest , the Chicago-based Maxwell Street Klezmer
Band has been playing
Yiddish pop tunes, dance music and
Jewish folk songs since 1983.
Named after Chicago 's busy
marketplace, Maxwell Street Klezmer Band
injects horn-driven energy
into the music of the past. With guitarist and
vocalist Lori Lippitz, co-founder
of Yiddish Art Ensemble and
a cantor of the Jewish Reconstruction
Congregation in Evanston ,
leading the way, the 15-piece group
pays tribute to the Klezmer masters
while allowing their music to evolve."

This (not the best) photograph is from the cover of the Maxwell Street
Klezmer Band's 1996 CD, You Should be So Lucky . This week, however,
WE'RE the lucky ones to have the privilege to spend an evening with this
group, which-in addition to its many Midwestern gigs--has played at both
Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center in New York City, as well as in London,
Munich, Amsterdam, and Vienna. Here is a fine opportunity to listen to, sing-along
with, or even dance to such tunes as "Live To Enjoy!" "The Rabbi's Wife," "The
Mother-In-Laws," "And the Angels Sing," and "Good Health Is All That Counts."
Add to this the keyboard artistry of Sharon Peterson playing such
seasonal tunes as "April in Paris ," "Younger Than Springtime," and "April
Showers"-plus spring songs from Scandinavia .
And as if this were not enough: tables of finger foods-savories and
sweets-plus wine and other beverages; a chance to win a two-week stay in
Paris plus $1000 for expenses; some two hundred opportunities to take home
high quality items at good prices in an evening long silent auction.
And the final opportunity, the bottom line: to raise money for the
North Shore Choral Society's gala 70 th anniversary celebration next season.
Who could ask for anything more?!
By the way, if you do not plan to attend the Benefit but wish to make
an auction bid, check the NSCS website: www.northshorechoral.org. Just follow
the prompts and take a look at the available items along with their minimum
suggested bids. Send your bid, along with your credit card information, to
Tom Miller at MILLERMTOM@aol.com. Your name and bid will be entered on the
bid sheet for each item; you will be informed if your bid is the highest,
and-if so--the item will be delivered to you at a future rehearsal.
(over, please)
Next Tuesday, April 12, the basses and tenors will rehearse with Donald
at Northminster Presbyterian Church beginning at 7:30 . The church is located
one block south of Central Street at 2515 Central Park Avenue, which is located
about one mile west of Green Bay Road and just a half mile east of Crawford
Avenue. The women will rehearse at the Unitarian Church as usual.

Bella Voce's 2005 Polyphony Camp will be
held at Roosevelt University on four successive Thursday evenings in August. "It's
not about preparing a performance; it's about sharing the experience of a
cappella singing under Anne Heider's direction, with time for a variety of
games and exercises that focus on listening while we sing." No audition is
necessary. Registrations are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis,
and enrollment is limited to 40 singers. For more information, contact general
manager Tamara Schupman at 312/461-0723 or tschupman@bellavoce.org.
And a few laughs perhaps?
A bicycle can't stand alone because it is two-tired.
A chicken crossing the road is poultry in motion.
If you don't pay your exorcist, you get repossessed.
The man who fell into an upholstery machine is fully recovered.
A grenade thrown into a kitchen in France would result in Linoleum
Blown apart.
