BLUE NOTES FOR TUESDAY,
MARCH 18, 2008
Lenore Dupuis reports that we can look for Dorothy Andries’ review
of our Sunday concert in the Pioneer Press Diversions online
edition on Thursday, March 20. Because of paper cutbacks, classical
reviews are usually online. Go to www.pioneerlocal.com, pick your town,
go to Entertainment, then Music or use this link
There’s still time to bring $$$$ into the NSCS treasury by using
our Jewel Shop and Share coupons tonight after the rehearsal and/or
all day tomorrow. Let’s stock up for the holiday week ahead--and
for the week after that--and so forth.
Many thanks to all of us who contributed to the success of last Sunday’s
concert. Special thanks to these folks:
Marcia Bollo and Ellen Pullin, for preparing the insert for the ESO
program
Mary Ann Kissock, for coordinating our activities with ESO
Ellen Pullin and Lenore Dupuis, for obtaining photos of the Elijah soloists
and permission to use them for the Pick-Staiger lobby display
Jamie Godshalk, Ron Tolisano, and Margarete Hendrickson, for handling
display table duties (While we didn't sell many Elijah tickets,
we certainly increased awareness of the concert.)
And everyone who brought solid refreshments for the breaks--and to
Yael Wurmfeld for coordinating that effort
As announced last week, the three finalists for our Music Director
position have been selected. Each of the candidates will conduct one
of next season’s three concerts. Each will have the same budget
for instrumentalists/soloists and will rehearse with us the same number
of times. Our regular concertmaster, Tom Yang, will contract for all
of the instrumentalists, and all concerts will be at Saint Luke’s.
Each finalist will present a concert program proposal to the
Board for final approval. Julia Davids will conduct the concert on
November 23, David Stech on March 8, and David Edelfelt on June 7.
Here are abbreviated biographies of the three candidates, in alphabetical
order:
Julia Davids earned a DM in choral conducting from Northwestern University,
masters degrees in choral conducting and voice performance from the
University of Michigan. She currently is director of choirs and
a voice instructor at Loyola University, and artistic director of the
Canadian Chamber Choir. Julia is also music director/conductor
of the Camerata Singers of Lake Forest and director of music ministries
at Trinity Methodist Church in Wilmette.
David Edelfelt earned an MM degree in vocal performance from Northwestern
University and a BM in music education from Crane School of Music in
Potsdam, New York. He is currently director of the Chancel Choir (70
members) and Motet Choir (12 members, SSAA) at First Presbyterian Church,
Libertyville, where his duties include leading choir and orchestra
in major choral works. David teaches voice privately at his Chicago
studio.
David Stech earned a master’s degree in orchestral conducting
from Northwestern University and a BA in organ performance and choral
conducting at California State University, Chico. David is music director
of the American Opera Group and the Chicago Choral Artists. He is also
music director and organist of the United Church of Hyde Park, vocal
coach at Roosevelt University, and staff accompanist at Roosevelt University,
