BLUE
NOTES FOR TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 2, 2008
MUSIC
This evening, we should all have eight pieces of
music for the first concert: five downloaded from our web site, and
three others that were purchased this evening (or were already owned). One
more piece is on is way: Michael Horvitt’s Even When God
Is Silent, which everyone should have already paid for. Thanks
to Librarian Bruce Gladfelter for having this music ready for us.
MEMBERSHIP GUIDES
Be sure to pick up a copy of the 2008-2009
Membership Guide this evening. Thanks
for its readiness go to Ellen Pullin, Anthony Green, and Len Barker.
BROCHURES
Extra brochures for the new season are available in the narthex. Take
some to pass out to family, friends, acquaintances, strangers, whomever. If
they’re mailed, a 42-cent stamp is required, and a bit of Scotch
tape to seal up the loose pages is recommended. Please take only as
many as will be used. Thanks again to Ellen for preparing and
taking charge of this annual project.
PROGRAM ADS
Now is not too soon to visit local businesses to request program ads
for our three concerts this season. Contract
forms with all
necessary information are available on a table near the juice this
evening—as well as programs from past concerts to use as examples.
Mary Ann Kissock, Program Ads Chair, is distributing lists to those
of us who obtained ads last season, encouraging us to call on these
same folks again. She has also prepared a spreadsheet from last season
for everyone to view. Please submit all contracts and payments to
Mary Ann as soon as they have been received. Thanks in advance—both
to us and to our advertisers. The deadline is October 15.
BENEFIT
During the next ten weeks—the amount of time before our Benefit on November 15--we’ll be reading and hearing a lot about this
special event. By now, most of us know that it will be “An Evening
with Rising Stars!,” featuring singers from four area universities
displaying their vocal talents; that plenty of good food and drink
will be served; that a silent auction of many desirable items
will be held; that vacations in Paris will be raffled off. What we
may not know is how much work it takes to make this occasion a success—and
to reach the $20,000 goal that has been set. And that’s where
we all come in.
Items for the silent action are needed. In addition to the many desirable
services that have been donated, tangible items for the auction tables
are in short supply—“good stuff” that we may no longer
want or need but that others may desire for their very own. Contracts can be obtained at rehearsals or downloaded from our web site. The
Benefit Committee has established the theme of “One and One”:
If every chorus member brings one guest to the Benefit
and contributes one auction item, success is assured.
In addition, volunteers are needed to help prepare the Benefit invitations
on Saturday, September 27. (A house in which to do this job is also
needed.). And help is wanted for food preparation and serving,
room set-up, decorations, entertainment assistance, raffle ticket sales,
auction administration, computer management, and—of course!—clean
up. More information and sign-up sheets will be available next week.
JUICE
Juice breaks, an anticipated feature of each Tuesday rehearsal, are
only possible through the willingness of singers to provide that
juice, along with cups (and perhaps even munchable goodies). Social
Chair Yael Wurmfeld thanks those of us who so generously contributed
last season—and looks forward to the same response this coming
year. Sign-up sheets are available where the juice is served. (And
don’t forget to put bills and/or change in the money cup when
you drink.)
BLUE NOTES
Blue Notes provides an opportunity for all NSCS members
to bring musical information to the attention of the chorus. One
of its major purposes is to cut down on the number and length of
break announcements—and therefore allow more time for rehearsing.
Please take time to read the Notes carefully, for often
they contain need-to-know messages. To place something in Blue
Notes, contact Len at lenpbarker@comcast.net or 847/272-2351
no later than the Monday noon prior to a Tuesday rehearsal. And remember
that each week’s Blue Notes is available on our web
site: www.northshorechoral.org. Thanks to Mars Longden for
providing us with hard copies and to Jim Miller for the electronic
version.
EMAIL MESSAGES
During the past few seeks, all chorus members should have received
several email messages from Len—mostly about the music for
our first concert. If you have not been receiving these messages,
that means he does not have your correct address in his system. Please
let him know this evening of any such problems.
ORGAN RECITAL
On Sunday, September 14, David Schrader will present an organ recital
following the 4:00 P.M. Evensong service at St. Luke’s Episcopal
Church, 939 Hinman Avenue in Evanston. On the faculty of Roosevelt
University, Schrader has performed and appeared in numerous music
festivals throughout the world, and has recorded with symphony orchestras
and chamber ensembles
SUGGESTION
Consider making a pitch for a program
ad and a pitch for an auction
item at the same time to the same potential donor.
